The Time to Teach About the Palestinian Struggle Is Now
Dear Friends –

Many educators are looking for ways to act in solidarity with Palestinians, in their classrooms and curricula. The mainstream media often censors Palestinian voices and downplays the occupation and confiscation of Palestinian land. The result is a one-sided narrative that justifies Israel’s policies of ethnic cleansing, oppression, and violations of international law.

To help bring understanding to the history of the Palestinian struggle and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, initiated by Palestinian civil society, we’ve compiled a list of resources on teaching Palestine from the Rethinking Schools archives: Boycotting Occupation: Educators and Palestine

Books About Contemporary Palestine for Children
By Katharine Davies Samway

U.S. media coverage of the Middle East is frequently Israel-centric and does not explore the enormous financial support that the United States provides each year to Israel and its occupation of Palestine. When this is coupled with a sometimes virulent anti-Muslim and anti-Arab, feeling educators must help unpeel these biases and encourage students to think critically about human rights in Palestine/Israel. Reading books about contemporary Palestine and the Israeli occupation may raise conflicting points of view, but that is part of supporting students to become critical readers, thinkers, and, we hope, activists in support of justice and peace.
